Professional
I’m now a full year out of Johns Hopkins and have competed in two years of the MLL with the Boston Cannons, and entering my second year with the NLL’s Washington Stealth.
What a ride it’s been thus far. I’ve learned a lot, but have yet to accomplish what I passionately want to get my hands on, a professional world’s championship. We had a shot at it this past Summer with the Boston Cannons, but fell short to the Denver Outlaws in the semifinals.
Individually, I was blessed with the honor of playing with such a talented Cannons roster including the likes of Ryan Boyle, Sean Morris, Matt Alrich, Greg Downing and Matt Poskay. These players helped me become the player that I am today. The veterans on the team helped me change my role as an offensive midfielder to a more “dodge to score” mentality. You see, sometimes as a player we can get caught up in “the play”; meaning, if our objective is to draw a double and move it, we become a “pass first” player and may not have the ability to convince the defense to slide to you. In other words, if you are always going to the goal to score (my mentality), you will always be a threat.
This past season in the NLL was an unbelievable experience. What a different game it is and what a different player I have become because of that. As most people know, I like to use my athleticism to open up space in field lacrosse. Well, in the NLL, pads are bigger and space is limited. Therefore, I’ve been called on to utilize different parts of athleticism that I had yet to pull on. I worked a LOT on my hand-eye coordination and ability to shoot and pass with someone carving away at your wrists…I can’t wait to get back at it with our team captain and all-time greats Colin Doyle. The experience I have gained from a player like him is invaluable. Stay tuned and watch some of our games on NLL.com
This season should be a great one and I am very much looking forward to spending some time in the Greater Washington region, home of some of the greatest fans in the country. Check us out at the Comcast Arena January 9, 2010
